Top tips for creating a baby shower gift list

Baby showers have been hugely popular in America for a long time but in recent years the trend has crossed the pond and exploded in popularity here in Britain. Although the concept can seem entirely foreign to some British mums to be, a baby shower is a great way to have your closest friends over to prepare to welcome your baby to the world.

Our private appointments often involve helping customers to compile a list to send out for their baby shower and it really is one of the loveliest parts of my job!

Baby showers are not only a great way to catch up with friends and celebrate your pregnancy. They also give your friends and family the opportunity to show their excitement, spoil you and buy some gorgeous gifts to help you and baby get settled in when they’re born.

Newborns can be expensive, so putting together a baby shower gift list is an ideal way of relieving at least some of the stress of those first few months. You’ll give the guests coming to your shower an idea of exactly what you want and need, as well as making sure that you get as few duplicate gifts as possible. But how should you go about preparing a gift list for a baby shower?

Plan early

Most mums- to- be will aim to have their baby shower in the 7th or 8th month of pregnancy, and not just because it feels a lot more real when you have a big baby bump. Making sure your shower takes place towards the end of your pregnancy allows you to do a lot of planning ahead, to make sure you can really decide on what you want and need when your baby comes.

We recommend starting all of your baby purchases including putting together a baby shower list around 20 weeks. Waiting until this time means that you’ll be able to find out the baby’s gender - although that isn’t for everyone. Most importantly, it feels like the right time to start picking out items for when they arrive.

Purchase some items yourself

When you’re putting together a gift list for your baby shower, it can be very easy to get carried away. They’re a great way for your close friends and family to help you out in the run up to the birth, but really the large essential items are expected to be bought by yourself.

Visiting us in the boutique to compile your nursery list means that you can choose your pushchair, car seat and nursery furniture and then add on matching accessorise, sheets and bedding to a separate baby shower list. For example adding on sheets, blankets and swaddles to match your moses basket ensures that you get the items that fit the size and style of basket.

Furthermore, it may be a good idea to keep some of the more personal items off your gift list to avoid any potential embarrassment. Breastfeeding accessories such as breast pumps and nipple cream are examples of other items that you may consider leaving off your list - it may feel a little awkward after all.

Many of our customers do put some of the other day to day essential items such as bottles, sterilisers and nappy bins on to their baby shower list and these are often some of the more popular purchases.

Work out a budget

One of the hardest aspects of putting together a baby shower gift list is making sure it’s inclusive for all budgets. Although you may be tempted to ask only for expensive video monitors, Sleepyheads and beautiful decorations for baby’s bedroom, remember to keep what your attendees can afford in mind. An ideal gift list for a baby shower should include a range of items, from cute socks and hats for someone looking to spend a little, to more expensive items like luxury changing bags for friends that want to club together for something expensive (after all, mum deserves a treat too).

Some of the best low-cost items to include on a baby shower list are muslins, swaddles, blankets, baby toiletries and pushchair accessories like a cup holder and parasol. Clothing is also enormously popular for your guests to purchase, lots of people love to buy a baby its first clothes!

By keeping your list wide-ranging and varied, not only will you be able to look forward to receiving a great selection of presents that are perfect for your baby, but attendees of your baby shower won’t feel too much pressure. The most important gifts are those that come from the heart, so making sure that nobody feels out of place with what they can give is a great way to make sure your gift list is appropriate.

Talk to your family

Now, when you’re putting together your list, you’ll certainly have a few great ideas of gifts you’d love to have. However, before making that public to any friends who’ll be guests at your baby shower, you should talk to your family first.

Your baby’s grandparents, aunts and uncles or cousins are likely to have already come up with a few extra special ideas for baby shower gifts. Family members will often want to get either a larger, more expensive gift for the baby, or a very personal present. As such, it’s definitely a good idea to talk with your family well in advance. It’s worth remembering that, as family members may be more likely to purchase more expensive gifts for your baby, your overall budget may drop, giving the guests a little more breathing room when it comes to choosing presents.

Necessities first

With the sheer amount of baby products on the market now, walking around a baby shop or browsing any number of websites can make the idea of creating a gift list for your baby shower seem utterly impossible. With what feels like a million variations of cots, bouncers and walkers, narrowing down what you’d like for a list sent out to only a few people is undeniably tough but we will help you navigate your way through this when you visit us in store.

Although it’s easy to get lost in the mass of baby supplies while making your gift list, try to stick to necessities first and foremost. Clothes are some of the most important items to put on your wishlist. Include sizes for newborns, 0-3 months and 3-6 months, because your baby will be growing quicker than you can keep up with them, and you’re going to need a lot of clothes in the coming months. Plus, your guests will love buying cute little outfits for your baby, so it’s a win-win.

Although necessities for your baby should probably take up the majority of your wishlist, don’t forget to treat yourself as well. Little gifts for yourself like stretch mark cream, body oils or some lovely chocolates are perfect

gifts that you can ask for yourself. There are also some great pregnancy and new Mum books which we think are great gifts. You’ll be well into your pregnancy by this point, and you deserve a treat.

Make a registry

Once you’ve decided on what you’ll ask for on your gift list, you need a way to collate it and ensure that guests to your shower will be able to access it. With the sharp rise in popularity of baby showers over the past few years, many companies now offer baby registries and online wishlists that can be sent out to friends and family (including here at Eat Sleep Love).

My wish list service allows you to put a list of gifts together and send it to attendees of the shower. Then, we’ll gift wrap and deliver all of the gifts bought on the list straight to your baby shower, along with a personalised note from every gift buyer. Ultimately, making an online registry can help to reduce any stress you - or your guests - might have in the days leading up to the shower.

Don’t worry

If you’re still feeling a bit daunted after reading through these tips for creating a baby shower list, don’t worry! It can seem intimidating and difficult, but it’s not worth stressing over. If you’re entirely unsure of what to ask for, vouchers and surprise gifts could be perfect! The people that should be invited to your baby shower are some of your closest friends and family members, the people who know you best. Because of this, whatever you put on your list, they’re still likely to bring presents that are perfectly suited to you and your baby.
